About the role
Surrey is a big organisation (approximately 11,000 FTE), and it’s changing across the board. So the key purpose of this role is to ensure that HR and OD provide the right professional support, in a timely, outcome-focused and forward-looking manner. Over the past year, the HR service has been reshaped to make it fit for the future, so the new Director will be joining an organisation with resource and capacity.

Strategic issues such as restructuring, reward and recognition, cultural change and employer branding are all on the agenda. Complicating factors include the scale of the organisation; the competition for talent in our part of the South East; balancing the demands of long-term planning and response to emerging issues, with keeping the delivery of ‘day job’ services on track; and creating a deeply embedded ‘One Team’ approach, even when services are experiencing very high levels of demand.
An office move is likely in the next 12-18 months, and this will need careful attention from the new Director. We know that a significant staff engagement programme will be needed to achieve the benefits of this change, and make a successful transition to agile ways of working.
